Saturday 4th January – 2 Walks **** Notre Dame des Vernettes,Peisey and Vanoise National Park

We packed up and cleaned up, leaving the apartment and the Hurrells about 9.15. They were going off for their 8th day skiing, joining Simon Natasha and Garrod, although he went poor old Lee was still feeling very rough. We went to the Intermache and got some bread and cake for later and also had a quick look round the Intersport. We drove out of Bourg heading for Peisey and were thinking the traffic was amazingly light as it is usually jammed on a Saturday morning at 10 a.m. but as soon as we got to the Bourg sign the road was at a complete standstill. We turned round and found a small road leading to Landry with absolutely no traffic and were soon on the windy road up to Peisey Nancroix, where we had our first and several more skiing holidays. We drove past Chalets Michka and Bart to have a look before heading up to Plan Peisey. We parked and had our lunch – very early as we were starving! Although it was snowing quite heavily we set out on our planned walk to the Notre Dame des Vernettes which you get to via the path we overlooked from our picnic table earlier in the week from the piste. It was a lovely walk, some of it on paths we had skied down. The chapel itself and its poor relation down the hill were lovely. The Notre Dame itself was very intricately painted – amazing for such an obscure location! Returned to the van and drove down to the Vanoise national park to park up for the night near the nordique skiing area. We had a cuppa, our nutty/caramel tarts and a rest before setting off to walk up the valley towards the Nordique skiing chalet, taking the track where the horse drawn carriages give rides. We had one ourselves the first year we were here – it was freezing! We saw a husky sled being pulled very fast down the same track and a few nordique skiers. It snowed all the way round but we had our ski stuff on so didn’t really notice. We walked as far as the virtually deserted village of Le Lanches and did see one hardy couple returning from a shopping trip in their snow shoes with big rucksacks on making their way up to their house at the very top of the village. Back to the van just as it was beginning to get dark.
